Inspired by Science, Inspiring Young Minds
 
International competitions play an important role in the education of highly talented school and college students opening new possibilities to extend their knowledge in sciences. The science competitions give the challenging opportunity to the young scientists to get some feedback of the work with which they are just trying to deal, and to measure their strength in an international field. Perhaps most of the participating students will later become students at various universities and will be researchers reporting at scientific conferences, this first appearance may be a decisive factor in their future scientific career. Getting Started Training at PC Donated School Ebrahim Ali Bhai Government Boys Secondary School
 
 
Intel donated 15 computers at Ebrahim Ali Bhai Government Boys Secondary School and with collaboration with Sindh Government; Intel ® Education team has conducted Getting Started Training from March 16, 2009 to March 21, 2009 with 36 teachers. Teachers completed this training with full enthusiasm and commitment for implementation and support. On the showcasing day, Mr. Shabbir Ahmed Jokhio, District Officer, Male Secondary & Higher Secondary was present.
 
Principle Awareness workshop at St. Peter’s High School
 
 
Intel® Education with the collaboration with Sindh Government had organized a Principal Awareness Workshop on March 25, 2009 at St. Peter’s High School. 25 principals and many officers from the Government Education department were present. Mr. Ibrahim Kumber, EDO Karachi was invited as a Chief Guest and Mr. Shabbir Ahmed Jokhio, DO Male Secondary & Higher Secondary was also present.

Ground breaking research of the nation's brightest minds Showcased at the National Science Olympiad 2008-2009
 
 

In another record-setting year, 1,604 students participated to qualify for entry in the Intel National Science Olympiad this year with a total of 813 projects from 270 institutions at the district and provincial levels. Again surpassing last year's totals, 228 students and 106 teachers of 78 institutions from all across Pakistan, qualified and participated at the National Science Olympiad 2009. These whiz kids were called to compete at National Science Olympiad held on 22-24 January, 2009 held in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and Intel Pakistan Corporation. A total of 121 projects were displayed at the National Library Complex in Islamabad from the 21-24 January 2009. The National Science Olympiad is the only affiliated fair with the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). Winners of the National Science Olympiad 2009 will represent the nation in the upcoming Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2009 in Reno, Nevada, USA. Read more.

 
Intel Celebrates Success in the Pre-Service Space
 
 

The first Intel contest for innovative use of technology in Pre-service institutes was organized in collaboration with the University of Education and the Intel® Education Initiative’s Intel® Teach Program. The award ceremony for the Intel Pre-service Contest was held at the University of Education Bank road campus, auditorium. Dr. Munnawar S. Mirza, Vice Chancellor of the University graced the occasion as chief guest. Read more.

 
Collaboration with Sindh Education Foundation
 
 

Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) is semi-autonomous organization focused on disseminating education in the disadvantaged and rural areas of the province of Sindh. The SEF works closely with the community, and has extended support to the Intel Education Initiative in the latter half of 2008. With the support of SEF, Intel conducted an MT batch covering seven schools, with 200-300 students each. Read more.

 
Technology In Preservice Education
 
 

We must involve more subject teachers besides IT teachers to integrate technology with existing curriculum.

Preparing technology-proficient teachers to meet the needs of the 21st century is a critical challenge facing teacher training programs. Although institutions of higher education vary in their specific responses to this challenge, the University of Education campuses require at least one educational computing course as a core component of their teacher preparation programs. The goal of such courses includes individual development of both confidence and competency in the use of information technology in various learning environments. Read more.

 
Teachers at St. Peter’s School enhance their capabilities of extending Classroom instructions using computers through Intel® Teach Program.
 
 
Five-day training was organized by the Teacher Training Department of the Diocese of Raiwind Education System in collaboration with the Intel® Education Initiative in the last week of July 2008. The program garnered the participants towards gaining technology literacy and developing key 21st Century skills for classroom instructions. 16 participants took part in the course; 14 of which were from St. Peter’s High School while the rest were from Dar-ul-Mussarat, a school for special children. Technology extends training beyond the classroom and immediate teaching practices in Gujrat
 
 
Computers should be and are used to drive subject material home. Competency-based activities are conducted to link realities in the classroom to those of everyday life. In this way, computers contextualize learning, giving teachers an opportunity to use real-life technology and develop research and problem solving skills that will serve them well in other contexts. Following the Intel Science Olympiads Award Ceremony in Pakistan, a number of media articles ensued.
 
 
The Pakistan Observer mentioned how the Federal Education Secretary, Muhammad Jehangir Bashar, said that it was encouraging to see Pakistani students in compete in international competitions and how such partnerships between Intel and the Pakistani government helped improve the quality of education and promote scientific knowledge among students across the country. The Financial Daily also quoted Mr. Bashar as saying, “It is heartening to see Pakistani students get international recognition through this platform created by private-public partnership.”

The News International and the Regional Times both wrote an extensive article about the ten Pakistani students that were awarded for their participation in various engineering competitions around the world, quoting Intel Pakistan Country Manager Ashar Zaidi, who said that the young scientists proved that there was “no dearth of talent and skills among the youth of Pakistan.”

 
Pre-service training and curriculum launched at the University of Sindh
 
 
The beginning of 2008 saw a new partner in the space of Pre-service training for the Intel® Teach Program. The Faculty of Education, Elsa Kazi Campus of University of Sindh (at Jamshoro and Hyderabad) organized a faculty training program with the Intel® Teach team. With the help of the course coordinators Professor, Dr. Parveen Munshi and Ms. Shakeela Shah of the University of Sindh a successful training was conducted with 30 participants. The auxiliary staff of the Faculty of Education also provided great support for the 5-day training conducted from the 23rd to the 27th of January 2008. Read more.
 
Young Pakistani Scientists Making Us Proud
 
 
Intel ISEF 2008, Atlanta: The Intel International Science & Engineering Fair 2008, the world's largest pre-college science fair was held from 11-16 May at Atlanta, Georgia. Awards were being given to the selected participants from more than 1,550 young scientists from 51 countries, regions and territories for their commitment to innovation and science. Pakistan sent three outstanding projects and four young and excited participants. Read more.
 
NCHD takes Intel® Education Initiative to the far flung areas of the country
 
 
National Commission for Human Development, NCHD joined hands with Intel® Education Initiative to promote ICT integration through their CLTC centers in different districts all over Pakistan. A four day workshop with 23 participants from all four provinces was conducted in Islamabad from 28th – 31st January 2008. The participants belonged to Pishin, Kech, Zhob and Lasbela in Balochistan; Manshera, Dera Ismail Khan and Mardan in NWFP; Gujrat, Mandibahuddin and Attock in Punjab; and Badin, Thatta, Umerkot and Jacobabad in Sindh. Breaking Barriers
 
 
Intel® Education and Pakistan Rangers will jointly contribute towards promotion of student centered learning environment in the Narowal District of Eastern Punjab in a small rural town on the border of India & Pakistan. The administration of Pakistan Ranger’s Public School and authorities at Pakistan Rangers have taken this bold step to promote technology aided, project based learning. Read more.
 
Intel® Teach Pre-Service Program at University of Baluchistan, Quetta
 
 
Intel® conducted a Pre-Service training at the Department of Education of University of Baluchistan from 3rd to 11th December 2007. Eleven faculty members and eleven students of the M.A education class participated in this nine-day workshop. Read more.
 
ICT training of teachers in 169 labs of the government schools in N.W.F.P
 
 
Intel® Education, Directorate for Information Technology N.W.F.P, Finance Department N.W.F.P and Schools & Literacy Department will collaborate for ICT training of teachers in 169 labs available in the Government schools all across 24 districts of N.W.F.P. A memorandum of understanding was signed by representatives of Intel® Pakistan Corporation (IPC) and the Information Technology Department, Government of N.W.F.P at a ceremony held in Peshawar on 4th December, 2007. Getting Started Trainings Held in 12 Districts of Punjab
 
 
Our life with computers will be much easier if we get a solid foundation in the basics first. The Directorate of Staff Development, Government of Punjab, in collaboration with Intel® Education Initiative, commenced the Intel® Teach Program, Getting Started Course trainings in 12 districts of Punjab simultaneously. This course has been created to help acquire technology literacy skills and develop 21st century teaching and learning approaches. Read more.
 
36 Orientation Workshops Held Across the Country to Educate Students About Research
 
 
More than 5,700 students participated in 36 Research Orientation Workshops held across the country in 2007. The Workshop Series is available to all public and private sector schools and colleges, free of cost. The aim of the research workshop is to introduce basic research skills to students and teachers of classes 9 – 12. This workshop helps you set goals, change attitudes and motivate to achieve the objective of promoting research in science and Maths. Read more.

22 IT Teachers from Public Sector Schools in Lahore Complete SFS Training
 
 
The Intel® Teach Skills for Success (SFS) Training was held at Central Model High School, Lower Mall Road, Lahore from 30th May to 2nd June 2007. The purpose of the workshop was to enrich the ICT teachers' knowledge about Technology based learning, and to allow teachers the opportunity to enhance their classroom activities. Read more.
 
Intel Pakistan Corporation & Rotary Club to jointly promote Technology in Education in Sindh
 
 
Karachi - March 20th, 2007: Intel Pakistan Corporation today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rotary Club of Pakistan to jointly to promote technology aided learning in the education environment through implementation of the Intel Teach Program and Intel International Science & Education Fair (ISEF) affiliated programs in Sindh.

Intel® Teach program incorporates the use of the Internet and multimedia software into content-focused lesson plan. Teachers lead the workshop with a solid documented unit plan that engages students in the use technology. The program is designed for teachers to enable them to use technology effectively to enhance student learning in this increasingly digital world. Todate, Intel has trained over 130,00 teachers across Pakistan in 80 cities and districts from various public and private schools.

Rotary Club, will coordinate with Intel Education to train 500 teachers in the province of Sindh and will also coordinate to hold several teacher forums and principal workshops.

Intel Teach Intel Education an initiative, which is focused on collaborating with educators around the world to improve the quality of science and mathematics education and to help students develop the higher level thinking skills they need to participate and succeed in a knowledge-based economy.

 
MOU signed with District of Khushab, Punjab
 
 
Intel Pakistan Corporation and the District Coordination Office of Khushab (Punjab) have signed an MOU in June 2007 to train all of the 6,000 in-service teachers in the district. This MOU has been signed under the Intel® Education Initiative in Pakistan, which has been running successfully in the country since 2002.

Khushab will be the first district in the country where all teachers will be trained on the Intel Teach curriculum, by December 2007. The teachers will be prepared to introduce ICT skills and integrate ICT into their teaching practices when the school term begins in August this year. District Trainers in Khushab were trained by Intel Senior Trainers, and in turn are now in the process of training MTs from various schools.
 
Intel® Education launches three new training programs in Pakistan
 
 
Under the Intel® Teach Program, the Intel Education team in Pakistan has launched three new courses in the country:

  • Thinking with Technology was launched in April 2007, with a pilot conducted in a private school in Karachi with 10 MTs. So far 53 teachers have been trained in the Tier 1 cities of Pakistan, including Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. The showcasing was attended by leading representatives from the Ministry of Education, Sind.

  • Skills for Success was launched in May 2007 in Lahore with 26 MTs from government schools. The pilot was conducted in Central Model School with ICT teachers to train them on how to involve students to first learn and then utilize their ICT skills in the best way possible. 42 teachers have already complete training on SFS in Pakistan.

  • Getting Started was launched in Lahore and Karachi simultaneously with 13 and 22 MTs respectively. The course focuses on subject / classroom teachers who have had little or no experience with computers. Already over 230 teachers have benefited from the training, which provides basic ICT skills and an introduction to project approaches.
 
Korea Women Inventions Fair 2007
 
 
Since 2001, Korea Women Inventors Association approved by the Republic of Korea Government has been successfully organizing Women Invention Expo, in which Korean women inventors participate. Read about young female students from Pakistan who have participated in 2007.

Asia Education Leadership Forum
 
 
Education leaders and government representatives from 11 Asia Pacific countries met in Seoul, Korea from June 19-22, 2006 to share their insights on building national competitiveness through education transformation.

Mr. Zahid Saeed, Special Secretary for Schools in Punjab, and Major Sahibzada Khalid, Secretary for Higher Education in NWFP attended the event with Sharleen Ghauri, Education Manager for Pakistan. Speakers and delegates were involved in sharing knowledge and learning and their vision for future education.

Representing Korea were officials from the MOE & HRD, along with representatives from the Education Research & Information Service, a policy execution office of the MOE & HRD including Lee Jong Seo, Vice-Minister, Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. Ms. Brenda Musilli, Worldwide Director of Education for Intel was also present at the event.

At the event, the MOE & HRD shared best practices around Korea's leadership in ICT education, and highlighted the importance of empowering education policy leaders in Asia Pacific to drive education reform within their market, in line with the changed needs of the 21st century.

Intel also shared its vision for education transformation in the 21st century. "Intel has a long-standing commitment to education, which we view as having a key role in sustaining national competitiveness," stated Brenda Musilli, Worldwide Director of Education for Intel. "Success in the global economy is increasingly linked to the quality of a nation's education. By collaborating with education leaders from around Asia Pacific for this forum, we intend to accelerate development of 21st century learning skills - such as collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking and technology literacy for Asia's youth."

In addition to formal sessions, delegates from different countries also established relationships with peers for the purpose of continued sharing of best practices around technology in education.
