Overview

Intel works with the Ministry of Education and teacher training institutions and university teacher training faculties to integrate the Intel® Teach curriculum into national pre-service and in-service teacher training. In 2002, the Ministry of Education’s Teacher Education Division incorporated Intel® Teach into their pre-service teacher training program and to date has trained in excess of 20,000 trainee teachers across the country. Since 2006, the Teacher Education Division has stepped up more efforts to integrate the curriculum further into pre-service teacher professional development programs.

The 32-hour Intel® Teach Essential course, as well as other advanced courses, provides practical instruction for in-service teachers to apply technology usage in teaching and learning. Intel Teach uses a train-the-trainer model, where teachers learn from other teachers. The curriculum, which consists of 8 modules, enables teachers to develop a collection of themed lesson plans that engage students in the use of technology to conduct research, compile information, and communicate results. The goal is for the students to develop projects that demonstrate attainment of challenging state and national standards.

Curriculum

Workshops consist of 32 hours of hands-on instruction, covering 8 modules of the binders available in English. The curriculum has been adapted or localized by the Teacher Education Division, Ministry of Education to conform to Malaysia’s requirements and needs. Emphasis is given on the effective use of technology in the classroom, research, communications, and productivity strategies, working in teams to solve problems as well as important pillars such as higher order thinking skills (HOTS), project based learning approach (PBL) and 21st century skills. The goal of the Intel® Teach Program is to train classroom teachers on how to promote project-based learning and effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum to support student learning activities. Teachers are provided with all the necessary curriculum materials.

Training model

The program uses the Train-the-Trainer Model. Master Facilitators (MFs) are identified by the principals of the participating schools. They undergo comprehensive training and then become the resource persons and impart training to other teachers in their schools. Intel® Teach Program certificate is awarded to teachers after successful completion of training and submission of unit portfolios.

Evaluation

Intel does a regular evaluation survey on the impact of Intel® Teach curriculum especially in the area of integration of technology into teaching and learning activities in schools. Intel normally appoints a neutral third party evaluator to undertake this research. The research findings which are available for policy and decision makers upon request may be useful to provide a description of the state of technology integration and usage model in schools and among teachers.

Enhancement activities

As a part of Intel’s sustained commitment towards teachers’ and educators’ professional development, enhancement workshops and activities are also organized from time to time for the teachers and principals. These are aimed at providing insights and support for integration of technology in classrooms as well as to further promote higher order thinking skills and inquiry-based learning amongst the students.
