CONGRATULATION TO FINALISTS AND WINNERS

Congratulations to the 5 teachers who have impressed the judges and won.

The award ceremony was held on 24 November 2010 at Putra World Trade Center, Kuala Lumpur. Dato’ Asariah Mior Shaharuddin, Deputy Director General, Teacher Professional Development, Ministry of Education, Malaysia presented the prizes to the winners.

Selected abstract for winning entries:

Madam Sawaran Jit Kaur attended her first Intel Teach Essential Course in August 2008. She carried out her first unit plan ‘Life’s Brief Candle’ with her Form 1 students in September 2008 and they created montages, posters and blogs. She realized that a change in teaching practice is essential to increase student engagement, creativity, communication and critical thinking skills. She then created another unit plan “Health is Wealth’ and together with the help of her colleague, Mrs Chang carried it out with the Form 2 students in 2009. The students planned a simple survey, analyzed the findings and presented in graphic form besides creating flyers and authentic nutritious drinks. Both these unit plans were sent in for the Intel Unit Plan competition last year and won the Smart School category Award and also the Grand Prize Award. Through these unit plans, she showed that students should not just be ICT savvy but learn how to use higher order thinking skills (HOTS), multiple intelligences (MI), collaborate and use critical and creative thinking skills (CCTS) to reach conclusions. Digital literacy and critical thinking help to develop independent learners and students enjoy the learning process besides acquiring 21 century skills. The project-oriented and hands-on approach used help students to do reflections, analysis and make moral judgments.

With the aim to implement lessons that are inquiry-driven, student-centered and increase the use of technology activities with students, she worked on two more unit plans in 2010 with her colleagues; Trees are Family and Garbage Enzyme. Students hugged trees, created pledges to protect trees, wrote songs on environment, made cards and shared their work on Earth Day. Students interviewed parents and teachers on how to make garbage enzyme, created advertisements, did role plays and created brochures. They displayed their enzyme and brochures on Earth Day and also demonstrated how the enzyme could be used. These unit plans were shared with other teachers and students in Miri district during a PBL colloquium on 3 July 2010. Madam Sawaran learnt to use blogs to communicate with her students and upload their work. She also did an online Project Based Approaches course and sent in an action plan “Literature is Fun’ and was one of the winners for September 2010 monthly competition.

Keeping time constraints in mind, she incorporated the unit plans in the scheme of work and took into account the themes and language skills to be covered throughout the year. Limited ICT skills did not deter her and her students who are ICT savvy became her source of knowledge as she believes that learning is a two way street. She played the role of a facilitator and allowed her students to explore and expand their limits through group and collaborative activities which help students to know their strengths and do peer learning. Students also learnt about different types of assessments and rubrics.

She hopes to improve her ICT knowledge and has been attending online webinars since June 2010 and maybe host her own webinar in the future. More projects will be planned, so that students can become independent learners, who learn outside the school walls; have teamwork, are actively involved and have opportunities to use the computer to do research and Web 2.0 tools to complete tasks.

Selected abstract for winning entries:

Mr. Ch’ng graduated from University Pertanian Malaysia with an honour degree in Industrial Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics and a degree in Education in 1985. Mr. Ch’ng was the State Trainer of the English for Teaching Mathematics & Science (EteMS) programme for 5 years. He was also the National Facilitator for Physics in 2005. He is currently the Panel Head for Mathematic Electives and the Coordinator of IT and Multimedia Department in Penang Free School. He was appointed by the school as the coordinator for the Cluster School of Excellence programme since 2007. Mr. Ch’ng has conducted many ICT courses in school under the staff development programmes. Being the Master Teacher of Additional Mathematics, he too has conducted several professional development courses for the Mathematics teachers from each school in Penang Island. In 2009, Mr. Ch’ng won the Penang Innovative Teacher Award. This year, 2010, He was promoted to a Master Teacher grade DG54 by the Ministry of Education.

This project of incorporating electronic spreadsheet in the teaching of Mathematics has proven to be an effective teaching and learning approach. In this project, students were given spreadsheet driven activities designed to encourage active learning which involves collaborative and corporative activities. Through this project, students are able to explore Mathematics and learned Mathematics concepts in a very interactive manner. His students have used some of the spreadsheet applications to check their answers; they have used it to assist them to complete their homework or assignments. Some of his inquisitive students were able to explore deeper into the mechanics of the Mathematics applications by studying the formula or formulas behind the interactivity. In 2008, spreadsheet modules has enabled his students (with no prior knowledge on the subject matter) to conclude several mathematical concepts through a series of spreadsheet activities that leads to self, guided and real-life discoveries at the end of the modules. This approach of using spreadsheet in Mathematics has also been applied with success in The Human Value-based Water and Sanitation Education (Commonwealth Good Education Project in 2008). In 2009, I shared this approach with a group of Teacher Educators from the African Countries. It was a success of course! This programme was sponsored by the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme and Japan International Cooperation Agency organized by SEAMEO RECSAM.

This year 2010, A mathematics lesson plan with spreadsheet modules entitled “Incorporating the Concept of Climate Change and Energy Consumption in Mathematics” was chosen by SEAMEO RECSAM to represent Malaysia in the Climate Change and Green Environment project. This compilation of lesson plans will be printed and distributed to all Asian Countries. Through it all, this approach has enabled my students to explore and appreciate Mathematics more passionately. Many of my students who have come to understand mathematics has proportionally achieved better academic results.

Selected abstract for winning entries:

Noreha Namlur from SMK Clifford, Kuala Lipis, Pahang is an Islamic education teacher for Form 2 and 3 since 2003. In the project "From Student to Student ', she provided a platform for students to highlight all the talents that they have. These students enthusiastically built up this project to be as beautiful as the name of their program ‘The Beauty of Ramadan’.

The Beauty of Ramadan or ‘Indahnya Ramadan’ is a program that covers the topic ‘Puasa’ in the Form 2 syllabus. In this project, students explore the advantages, events, good practice and privilege worship in the month of Ramadan. Students presented each item using multimedia presentations, forums, exhibitions and quizzes.

They really enjoyed sharing their prior and new knowledge with fellow students from Form 1 & 2 through forum, exhibitions, multimedia presentations and quizzes. This project brings out the latent soft skills of students. They took the initiative to sit together to discuss the project, how to overcome problems and the decisions to be taken. Communication and collaboration among students became better. The attitude and sense of responsibility can be seen from their commitment to the project from the very beginning till the end. Students who rarely spoke became more confident and eager to express their views and showed leadership qualities. Students who are less outgoing became more sociable.

What is the Award?

The Intel Exemplary Teacher Award 2010 (Hadiah Guru Mithali Intel 2010) is an activity organized by Intel Malaysia in conjunction with the 10th year anniversary of Intel® Teach Program in Malaysia.

Teachers play an important role in our children’s education and hence the nation’s future. Transforming teaching practices in schools then contribute to the competitive advantage of a country. An apt quote from past Intel Corporation chairman, Craig Barrett, ‘computers are not magic, teachers are,’ succinctly highlights the salient role of teachers in schools. Given the tremendous challenges our nation faces politically, economically and socially, teachers represent the beacon of our hope and agents of change.

This award recognizes teacher’s role via rewarding their contribution in transforming the landscape of education.

What are the objectives?

The sole objective of this Award is to value, recognize and energize exemplary teachers and educators for their innovative practices in the classroom.

Who is eligible for the Award?

This Award is open to all active teachers and educators in the public schools and teacher education institutions under or which are registered with and approved by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.

What are the evaluation criteria?

The applications will be evaluated according to selected criteria which is including but not limited to the following:
1. Impact to learning
2. Use of innovative pedagogy
3. Integration of technology
4. Sustainability of the exemplary practice
5. Potential replication

What are the prizes?

The Award shall be conferred to 5 exemplary individuals.

The breakdown of the prizes are:

1x Gold Winner
Winner will receive prizes of RM3000 in cash, a Netbook, and a Certificate of Achievement each.

2x Silver Winners
Winner will receive RM2000 in cash, a Netbook, and a Certificate of Achievement each.

2x Bronze Winners
Winner will receive RM1000 in cash, a Netbook, and a Certificate of Achievement each.

How to submit application to the Award?

The Award organizer calls for nominations from teachers and educators in public schools and teacher education institutions.

The procedure to submit the nominations is as per details below:

Nominations shall be submitted to the Secretariat Intel Exemplary Teacher Award no later than October 15, 2010 using the Award Application Form which can be downloaded below.

Each nomination shall be submitted with attachments covering:

  • Description of individual’s background, profession and achievements (1 page, A4 size, in Bahasa Malaysia/English)
  • Summary of the exemplary practice (maximum of 4 pages, A4 size, in Bahasa Malaysia/English), including:
    • Rationale, objective, target group, beneficiary, implementation process, resources used, funding sources, costs, partners, monitoring and evaluation, outcomes and impact of your project,
    • Key exemplary practices: impact to learning, use of innovative pedagogy and integration of technology
    • Challenges and constraints, and actions taken to overcome them
    • Sustainability of the exemplary practice
    • Potential replication plans
  • Except B4 & B5, submit full evidence to support the nomination, e.g. publications, key documents, audio-visual materials, CD-Roms, DVDs, websites, lesson plans, teaching and learning materials, student assignments, evaluation reports, research reports, minutes of meetings, etc. (may be in Bahasa Malaysia/English)
  • Letters of recommendation (in Bahasa Malaysia/English)
  • Intel personal release form (available from the website, in English)

What are the conditions of entry?

  • All complete entries must be from active teachers or educators from public schools and teacher education institutions under or which are registered with and approved by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
  • The work must be attested to be authentic and original.
  • The project embodying the exemplary practice must have been deployed and initiated minimum in the last 3 months and maximum 3 years.
  • Shortlisted entries may be asked to supply more documents or evidence, if necessary.
  • All complete entries must be accompanied by evidence that supports the nomination.
  • All nominees will be responsible for the delivery of their package to the Secretariat and for checking that their package is received by the Secretariat.
  • All complete submissions will be taken to imply the granting of permission to publish all materials and particulars, without charge to Intel.
  • All nominees must complete the consent form available online at the Award website permitting Intel to publish and share their work, on the understanding that the work will be fully acknowledged and credited to the relevant individuals or institutions stated in the nomination forms.
  • All materials submitted will not be returned.
  • The judges’ decision is final and correspondence or review will not be entertained.
