Evaluation 2006
Evaluation of Intel Learn Program was carried out using the instruments provided by SRI International, for both the modules – TAC (Technology and community) and TAW (Technology at work). Additional data were sourced out from support group meetings and observation visits to the implementation areas.

Purpose of evaluation: To study & analyze its impact and effectiveness, improvisation and dissemination of best practices

Methodology: Evaluation is a continuous process and is based on the analysis of the following:

  • Data for evaluation collected by the instruments designed by SRI International
  • Observation Visits
  • Support Group Meetings
  • Site Visits

Data collected from the following implementing areas:
TAC: Malappuram Akshaya Centers, NVS and Chandigarh UT schools
TAW: Malappuram Akshaya Centres

Aim of Intel® Learn Program is not only to develop Technology Literacy but also to develop 21st Century Skills in learners. Development of 21st century skills is also assessed in a scale of 1-5:

Changes in learners' abilities during the course (on a scale of 1 - 5)

Snapshot of the Evaluation

Technology and community

Performance impact
Intel® Learn Program has created a ripple effect beyond the computer laboratory. Staff felt that there is a complete change in learners’ abilities after participating in Intel® Learn Program. Learners are now more active and eager to know anything that is going on in the classroom.

Ms. Supriya and Mr. Jince Mohammad teachers from Irshad English Medium School, Eramangalam Angadi Changramkulam, Malappuram, find the nature of their classroom has changed dramatically, after majority of the students attended the Intel® Learn Program after school hours. Toady the teachers find their students becoming more confident and comfortable in working in groups assigned as a part of the curriculum. Also, learners do all the activities with proper planning and analysis. The bond amongst the students is also growing day by day.

“Students were often reluctant to come up with answers to the questions asked in the classroom and the concept of sharing was unknown to them”, say the teachers.

Social impact
“Certain part of the newspaper disappears when I take the paper to read after the morning household duties” remarked Ayyishia, mother of a learner named Junaid to the facilitator Mr. Zubair.

According to Ayyishia (Junaid’s mother), Junaid spend most of his free time productively and have become confident, inquisitive and aware of his community and its problem.

The impact can be summed up by the Junaid’s remark of his role and importance of technology in the community -

“Even children like us have a role to play in the community and now we know how to use the media effectively, thanks to Zubair Sir”.

Technology at work

Performance impact
“After attending the TAW program I learned well to use excel, which was difficult even after 4 years of learning computer from school”, remarks a girl learner named Rajitha.

So also Fatimah Hanna a learners from Munderi explained the changes in her after the TAW program. She explains that after attending the program she sees life in a different perspective and so her method of study. Hanna sees herself more confident and realizes the importance of group work as well as planning, which she has made her daily habit.

Social impact
The most interesting evidence can be seen in girl learners. Girls are seen to discuss confidently their aim and aspirations, and talking openly about their future education and careers. So also the parents of these girl learners; realizing the importance of careers and education in the life of their children, specifically girls. Corroborated by the following remark made by Hanna Sanna’s mother Haseena, “I was surprised to see my daughter discussing her career with her friends which is something new since she has completed the TAW program from the Puthalam Akshaya centre”.

Intel® Learn Program in sum

A comparative study on the gradual change in learners' abilities occurred in terms of technological skills, problem solving and collaboration skills from TAC to TAW program (Staff’s view – on a scale of 1 to 5):

Technological Skills

Critical Thinking Skills

Collaboration

The above bar charts show the changes in learners’ abilities in terms of ability in Problem Solving, Project Planning & Project Design and Collaboration Skills are higher in the Technology at Work (TAW) module when compared to Technology and Community (TAC) module. This shows the gradual development of all the three skills, this could be because: all the learners in TAW module would have successfully completed the TAC module which would make the learners well prepared to the learning processes of the Intel® Learn Program.
