Preparatory work for the different competition levels commences in August when students present project proposals to their science advisers who, in turn, help them individually or in teams fine tune the scientific concepts they want to highlight in their projects. The advisers also guide them in the execution of their projects.

For the students to make it to the grand finals, they first have to hurdle the division level competition which is usually conducted on October of every year. Then those students who win in the division level move on to compete against the winners of the other divisions for a chance to represent their region in the national level competitions.

Students are judged on the basis of the following criteria: creativity, resourcefulness and inventiveness; scientific thought; thoroughness; research skills; their exhibit and oral presentation skills.
