Technology adoption in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) has undergone a positive change with the schools adopting innovative teaching-learning strategies for enhancing student learning and using technology effective & efficiently for Whole School Development, rather than confining it to the Computer Labs.

To explore the e-learning environment and adopt solutions that would enable them to effectively enhance student learning, Intel collaborated with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) and piloted the use of Classmate PCs in JNV – Mothuka, a school in the suburbs of Delhi in 2007. The objective was to augment education for children with e- Learning. A total of 54 CMPC student units, 2 teacher laptops along with the necessary soft ware & digital lesson plans were provided for the pilot study. Teachers were also given training for successful implementation.

The CMPC implementation was initiated in class VII for the academic session 2007 – 2008. The teachers made use of the e-learning environment for Mathematics & Science. It helped them in smart assessment and monitoring of students which lead to corrective measures to be adopted almost instantly. Discussion forums, Group chats and Assessment tools were some of the methodologies adopted. The pilot was successful in terms that it made the schools ideate Classmate PC as an integral and helpful device in the teaching-learning concept.

School Exchange Program

The “Dreams & Teams School Exchange Program” gave an opportunity to the JNV Principals and Teachers to visit UK and observe the teaching practices followed by the schools out there. In continuation, the Principal and Head Teacher of St John’s School, E. UK, visited India to interact with the students of JNV Mothuka on 20th & 21st April 2009.This was an excellent opportunity for the Vidyalaya to showcase the innovative methodologies and strategies adopted to develop constructivist learning in the JNV students.

The visitors witnessed the e-learning session for a duration of 40 minutes wherein each student had access to the Classmate PC’s. “Fertilization in Plants” was the topic identified by the teachers as it contained some abstract concepts. The teachers used the File Broadcasts feature in CMPCs to help the students understand the different stages in fertilization with appropriate visuals and explanations. The students took notes of the salient features during the course of explanation on their computers. They did collaborative work by using Group Chats and Discussion Forum feature on the various flowering plants in and around their surroundings. The collaborative work saw students participating actively and doing constructive learning through peer interaction.

It was indeed an enriching experience to see the students who are predominantly First Generation Learners use technology to construct, collaborate and communicate.

The innovative methodology elicited positive responses from the visitors of the exchange school.
