Intel Philippines has been committed to working with local governments and councils on projects to help reduce the environmental impact of businesses and communities, and raise environmental awareness.
For Earth Day 2008, Intel Philippines, together with the Municipal Government of General Trias, worked on the construction of a mini Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). The project served as the template for ten other villages in the General Trias municipality. They also successfully constructed MRFs to help manage solid waste in a manner that not only improved public health and minimized environmental impact, but complied with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
In 2008, Intel Philippines was a bronze award winner for its entry – titled “Together We Save the Environment for a Better Tomorrow” – into the 2008 Environmental Excellence Awards. The team demonstrated the implementation of a robust environmental management system – which focused on water conservation, energy conservation and waste management. Some quantifiable results included:
172,760,000 liters of water saved through a water conservation program;
8,216,597 kwh of energy saved through an energy conservation program, for which Intel Philippines received an Energy Efficiency Excellence Award from the Department of Energy;
Recycling of 97% of its chemical waste and 92% of its solid waste through the implementation of a robust waste management program.
Other successful projects include a partnership of Intel Involved Volunteers, the Cavite State University, a local organization of fishermen (NAMAMANGKA Inc.) and the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (an NGO focusing on rural development). The team cleaned a previously refuse laden coastal area of Naic municipality and planted 2,000 propagules in the area. The project helped to raise community awareness on the importance of mangroves for coastal resource management.
Intel also partnered with the In Christ Freedom Prison and Teaching Ministries, a non-government organization focused on helping prison inmates find productive work, to create recycled bags made of recyclable materials. Almost 3000 bags were made, some of which were presented to Intel employees along with a photo book from the prison facility. The recycled bags did not only reduce Intel’s waste generation, but raised environmental awareness among employees.
