Education Transformation Momentum Builds Throughout 2012

The rapid evolution of technology and increasing availability of information through the internet is accelerating the need for education modernization. Countries across the region are seeing the value in preparing their workforce with 21st century skills, so they can capitalize on opportunities to create wealth and opportunity. There is a growing recognition that the spirit of entrepreneurialism is critical to fostering economic growth remaining in today’s continually-changing and highly competitive global environment.

However, meaningful changes in education cannot be achieved with steps in just a few areas. Intel believes there must be a holistic approach towards education development. Our model of education transformation focuses on five pillars: policy reform, curriculum and assessment, sustained professional learning, information and technology and research and evaluation.

To bring about systematic transformations in education, Intel fosters collaborative partnerships with policy makers, educators, NGOs across the region, to design develop, and deploy education transformation initiatives.

In Thailand, Intel launched the ‘Future Classroom’ pilot project in a move to support the government’s efforts to modernize its education system. The project demonstrates the type of holistic approach needed to create true education transformation. During the pilot period, classes from the Taweethapisek and Wat Rachathiwas Schools in Bangkok will receive 10-inch screen tablets from Intel in addition to comprehensive support for the ICT infrastructure needed to provide Wi-Fi and content across the schools.

In addition, we conducted a series of education transformation workshops around the region. In the latter part of the year we teamed with partners UNESCO and World Bank on events such as the Asian Ministerial Forum on ICT in Education ( AMFIE ) 2012 and the Global Symposium on ICT in Education.

At a regional level, AMFIE 2012 ignited dialogue at a ministerial-level between delegates from twenty nations. The best practice models shared by Singapore and Thailand sparked strong interest from other countries to engage in cross-regional collaboration, focusing on developing teacher competencies and strengthen ICT policies.

The Global Symposium encouraged international collaboration, bringing together delegates, policy makers and educators from across the region to discuss reform initiatives, evaluate the effectiveness of ICT in education, and establish systematic ways of sharing and producing quality content for quality education.

Intel has been a long-standing facilitator of education transformation in the region. Throughout this year, we made remarkable progress in helping contribute to education reforms in communities across Asia Pacific. In the coming year, we look forward to expanding and strengthening our partnerships across the region. We are committed to continue to facilitate collaborative discussions on transforming education, designing and deploying effective policy reforms, and enabling youth to achieve their full potential through educational opportunities.
