In June, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett met with Sichuan provincial government officials to launch the “iWorld” project, which aims to rebuild and restore areas devastated by the recent Sichuan earthquake. The project places heavy emphasis on getting students back into school by establishing 200 state-of-the-art “e-classrooms” and extending Intel education programs to schools across eight severely-affected counties in the province.
Intel also donated RMB48 million (approximately US$6.9 million) – raised from Intel employees and the Intel Foundation. The donation will not replace damaged schools, but will try to supplement them with classrooms equipped with computers and high-speed Internet connections.
