Students and teachers gather at the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair

The annual Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF), which showcases the country’s most innovative science and research talent, was held on 20 January 2009 at the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). The SLSEF is aimed at being a catalyst for inventive thinking, uplifting local education and motivating youthful innovators.

The SLSEF featured the top ten projects from the Science Research Project Competition (SRPC) 2008 of the National Science Foundation, as well as the IESL Junior Inventor of the Year 2008 competition.

The winners of this year’s event will be representing Sri Lanka at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Reno, Nevada in USA in May 2009. Two of the local winners will compete at Intel ISEF, while the runner-up will participate as an observer.

Yasith Lokuge, a student of Ananda College Colombo and past SLSEF finalist, said, “I’m delighted for the winners of today’s event and wish them their very best for this year’s ISEF. The SLSEF and ISEF have been wonderful platforms for helping Sri Lankan students, exhibiting our talent and facilitating interaction with students and scholars from across the globe. I thank the Ministry of Education, National Science Foundation, Institution of Engineers and Intel for providing us the opportunity to take part in these events.”
