In June and July 2009, Intel launched the Inspiring Young Innovators (IYI) program at selected schools in Bangalore, India. The program is being piloted by selected schools in Bangalore during the 2009-2010 academic year, with support and guidance from the Intel® Teach Program. Its key objective is to foster the scientific and technological spirit which will inspire and empower students to move towards greater innovation and creativity.

The grand winners of the Intel National Science Olympiad 2009, held earlier this year in Islamabad, represented Pakistan at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). The representatives were Malik Usama from Pak Turk International School and College, Khairpur, who was an individual finalist with his project ‘Waste water sewage treatment’, and group finalists Mohammad Naeem Khan and Syed Zaki Hussain from Sir Syed Science College, Rawalpindi, with their project ‘Hovercraft’.

On 18 April 2009, the U.S Embassy of Vietnam presented Intel with a Certificate of Appreciation for its Intel Teach and Intel Higher Education initiatives across the country.

In March 2009, Intel announced that over 1,000 universities in 72 countries worldwide had joined the Intel® Academic Community. The community delivers parallel programming and visual computing curricula to universities. As most new processors shipped are multi-core, software development is shifting from serial to parallel programming.

Today, over 40,000 teachers in Thailand have benefited from the Intel® Teach Program, which provides teachers with a better understanding of how, when and where to integrate technology into the curricula in order to promote problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills among its students.

The annual Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF), which showcases the country’s most innovative science and research talent, was held on 20 January 2009 at the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). The SLSEF is aimed at being a catalyst for inventive thinking, uplifting local education and motivating youthful innovators.

In February 2009, following the Sri Lankan government’s recent announcement that 2009 will be the year of English and Information Technology (IT) adoption, the Hon. Susil Premajayantha - Minister of Education - presented 425 Intel-powered Classmate PCs (CMPCs) to 19 schools across the island of Isurupaya.

Preparing technology-proficient teachers to meet the needs of the 21st century is a critical challenge facing teacher training programs. The University of Education campuses in Pakistan require at least one educational computing course as a core component of their teacher preparation programs. The goal of such courses includes individual development of both confidence and competency in the use of information technology in various learning environments.

In the last week of July 2008, a five day training session was organized by the Teacher Training Department of the Diocese of Raiwind Education System (DRES) in collaboration with the Intel® Education Initiative. The program aimed to equip participants with 21st century skills for the classroom. Sixteen participants took part in the course - 14 from St Peter’s High School and two from Dar-ul-Mussarat, a school for children with special needs.

2008 proved to be a great success for budding Pakistani scientists and engineers competing in international competitions. The Intel International Science & Engineering Fair 2008, the world's largest pre-college science fair was held from May 11-16 in Atlanta, Georgia. Pakistan sent four students who presented three projects. The Pakistani team project by Zahra Suleman Tejani, Sara Moiz Ali and Arif Pyarali of Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi were awarded a cash award of US$1,000 by the American Intellectual Property Law Association for their project.

On October 20 to 22, the fifth Intel Asia Academic Forum (AAF) was successfully held in Taipei, Taiwan. Over 150 delegates from eight countries participated in the Forum, including 90 faculties and 20 speakers from Intel.

On 10 October, Intel Sri Lanka - in collaboration with the Secondary Education Modernization Project (SEMP) of The Ministry of Education - donated Classmate PCs and a Wi-Fi zone to Dharmaraja College Kandy in Sri Lanka.

In May, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) took place in Atlanta, with 23 Chinese students having participated in the competition. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science competition, aimed at expanding knowledge and enthusiasm for science, mathematics, and engineering. 15 Chinese students were awarded in 14 category prizes. A number of winners were also awarded by having asteroids named in their honour - amongst them were three Chinese students: Fang Xing, Qiu Jun and Bai Xuefei.

In June, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett met with Sichuan provincial government officials to launch the “iWorld” project, which aims to rebuild and restore areas devastated by the recent Sichuan earthquake. The project places heavy emphasis on getting students back into school by establishing 200 state-of-the-art “e-classrooms” and extending Intel education programs to schools across eight severely-affected counties in the province.

Intel and the Ministry of Education (MoE) in China recently organized vocational seminars for the electrical industry. More than 130 duty deans from the electronics and IT departments of more than 50 vocational schools all over China converged in Beijing to take part, marking the first-ever Intel/MOE co-developed Fabrication and Assembly & Test Manufacturing Faculty Training Program.

In August, the Intel Science Olympiad Awards Ceremony was held to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the students who had represented Pakistan in international competitions and fairs. The ten students recognized had all participated in this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest pre-college science competition. They had also participated in the second International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO-Eurasia) in Azerbaijan, the Dreamline International Design Olympiad in Turkey and the Korea International Women Invention Exposition.

In July, Intel, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, launched Sri Lanka’s first Classmate PC Lab at the Sri Rahula Balika Maha Vidyalaya in Malambe as part of Intel’s World Ahead Program. The lab was launched following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between the Education Ministry and Intel, which aims to enhance teaching and learning processes through the use of state-of-the-art technology.

In August, Intel Products Vietnam and Arizona State University (ASU) held a Microelectronics Packaging curriculum workshop in Ho Chi Minh City. The objective of the workshop was to introduce and accelerate the advancement of the Package Technology curriculum in Vietnam universities through providing an overview of the Package Technology curriculum model from ASU.

Three Sri Lankan students, the winners of the Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair 2007, attended the Intel Science & Engineering Fair 2008 in Atlanta for the first time. Meanwhile, a group led by Mr. Anura Dissanayake, Director, Secondary Education Modernization Project (SEMP) of Ministry of Education, attended the Intel ISEF Educator Academy 2008 to share educators’ experience on science fair organization and the proven ways to engage students in the study of science and math. Both students and officials from Sri Lanka benefit from this experience by interacting with other participants, and the officials strengthen their confidence and resolution to improve local competitions.

Three winners of Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair 2007 received a certificate and a monetary gift from the Honorable Minister of Education in Battaramulla on May 8, 2008. Later, they will attend Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia.

BANGKOK, Thailand, 6 May, 2008 – Intel is expanding its Intel® Teach program in Thailand to higher education this year.
Three leading Rajabhat universities will run the Intel® Teach Essentials Course for pre-service (before becoming qualified)
teachers. The program aims to train 400 Education Faculty students by the end of this year.

The Intel® Teach Getting Started (GS) Program was, the 1st time in Vietnam, piloted for 60 teachers teaching in 2 schools (Nguyen Dinh Chieu & Tuong Lai schools – Danang City) for underprivileged students, i.e. those with hearing, visual and speaking disabilities. The Program was very highly appreciated by the schools, teachers and Danang city authority. “The Program helps teachers increase the productivity by using the technology and the new methodology used in classroom also helps motivate underprivileged students to look actively for new knowledge and engage in active learning,” commented the Principal of Tuong Lai School.

On 6 March, 2008, Intel Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City DOET held the workshop on the preparation for Vietnam to join Intel ISEF 2009 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Sponsored by Intel, Tokyo Gakugei University, and three Board of Education Consortiums, the Education Forum 2008 was held on March 1 at the hall of Tokyo Gakugei University, with the theme of "21st Century Teaching". Ninety in-service teachers, pre-service teachers and faculties participated in the Forum.

A ceremony was held on November 1, 2007 at Beijing No. 2 Middle School to demonstrate the achievements and impacts of the Intel® Teach Program over the past seven years. The event also announced that one million teachers have participated in the Intel® Teach Program and that 100 million students have benefited as a result. China is the first of over 40 countries where Intel Teach is available to reach this milestone.

A ceremony was held by Danang Department of Education and Training on January 4, 2008 to conclude the phase 1 of Intel® Teach Program Getting Started Course and launch the phase 2 in Danang, Vietnam. The program has helped local teachers innovate teaching methods and integrate ICT into classroom. By far the program has trained 3,150 local teachers, and is expected to cover all teachers in the city.

The 1st South Asia Intel Teach Program Forum was successfully held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on December 17-18, 2007. Top academicians from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka attended this regional cross-country collaborative event to share their experiences related to curriculum integration and professional development. This event promotes Intel Teach Pre-service training in South Asia and benefits all participants.

Since launched in 2002, Intel® Teach Program has contributed to Korean education for five years and trained 50,000 educators to promote 21st century teaching and learning. And the first “Nationwide Pioneer Workshop of Intel Teach Essentials Online” kicked off in Korea on December 8, 2007.

On November 20, 2007, a new Intel® Education initiative Skoool™ Sri Lanka was successfully launched in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka. The Skoool™ Sri Lanka, hosted on the SchoolNet—a wide-area network, is a valuable online interactive Maths and Science educational resource for the teaching and learning in Sri Lankan school community.

On Oct 24 to 26, 2007, the Intel Asia Academic Forum (AAF) was successfully held in New Dehli, India. 142 delegates participated at the forum including 86 faculties from 55 Asian universities and 23 speakers from Intel. The forum fostered an environment for networking, interaction and collaboration between academia and Intel technologists. This is the fourth time the Asia Academic Forum was held. The objectives of the forum are to showcase Intel’s technology roadmap, business and research directions, demonstrate exemplary work of faculty in curriculum development and research and discuss challenges faced by industry, government and academia.

Educational policymakers from ten different Asian countries gathered in Manila to attend the Asia Policy Forum on ICT Integration into Education on September 19th-20th, 2007. The Forum not only promotes the communication on ICT application, but also paves the way for the future development of ICT. It highlighted the needs to provide more teacher development programs, and develop adequate plans and sustainability strategies based on local conditions. The Forum has received positive feedback and high evaluation from participants.
