Since entering the Vietnam market in 1997, Intel Vietnam has been working closely with the Vietnamese government and the local information technology providers to spur adoption of information technology in the country. Some highlights:

  • Thanh Giong - This program targets increasing digital literacy among the young population, particularly in rural areas. Developed and led by Intel, and endorsed by the Vietnamese Youth Union as a Government-Assisted PC Purchase initiative, (GAPP) the program provided more than 100,000 affordable PCs to Vietnamese young people. It is one of the first GAPP programs in Southeast Asia.
  • My First PC" - Endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education and Training, Intel and 12 local PC system integrators and two local banks offered affordable desktop and laptop systems bundled with discounted ADSL broadband. The program offered one year interest free to families that were buying their first PC
  • "Smart PC. Smart Business" - This program aimed at increasing PC and Internet usage in small and medium businesses (SMB), one the fastest growing segments in Vietnam. Developed by Intel and 12 local PC systems integrators, the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Ministry of Post, Telecom, and IT, the program offered choices of hardware and software solutions and ADSL broadband. The Government's Bank (Vietcom Bank) provided one year-interest free financing to qualified business owners
  • Internet access for farmers in Bac Ninh Province - Over 60 percent of the Vietnamese population works in rural areas, and many farmers lack critical information on market pricing, what products to grow, how to best grow them, and where to sell them for the highest profit. Intel and the government of the Province of Bac Ninh worked together to equip 200 community centers to provide Internet access for farmers.
  • WiMAX trial in Lao Cai - In perhaps the first program of its kind that involves Intel, the Vietnamese government, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Vietnam's largest information service provider (ISP) rolled out a WiMAX trial in Lao Cai, a remote province on the Vietnam-China border. The trial provides PCs and fast wireless Internet connection based on WiMAX technologies to schools, hospitals, government offices, small business, and citizens. The trial will help prepare the Vietnamese government to further extend WiMAX service in the future

Like all other major Intel sites worldwide, the Vietnam site will make strategic contributions and provide employee volunteer time and expertise to help the surrounding community become a better place to live, work, and learn. The Intel® Involved in the Community program plays is a key role for many Intel Vietnam employees. In 2008, Intel Vietnam employees contribute over 3,000 volunteer hours to the local community, enriching people’s lives and providing learning opportunities through technology. Some highlights:

  • Tet Outreach at Go Vap Center:  In February 2008, Intel Vietnam organized the "Tet Outreach at Go Vap Center for Children Protection and Nourishment" initiative, with Intel Involved volunteers visiting a local orphanage to look after, play and talk to the children.
  • Walk for Education Fund:  In March, the Youth Union of District 9, cooperating with Saigon High-Tech Park, coordinated "'The Second Walk for Education Fund" to raise funds to support talented but economically disadvantaged children. Intel Vietnam was the main sponsor for the Education Fund, contributing US$15,000 and with 50 Intel Involved volunteers participating in the walk.
  • IT Lab Donation to Phuoc Binh Secondary School: Committed to making information more accessible for high school children, Intel Involved volunteers participated in an IT Lab Handover Ceremony in Phuoc Binh in April 2008, a public secondary school where Intel donated a lab room with 45 PCs and one projector. Volunteers will give demonstrations in the new lab room, as well as conduct classes and tutorials for the children. On October 24, on the IT Community Day, the IT team came back and  performed maintenance on the forty-five donated PCs, eliminating reported errors, optimizing performance, and disabled unnecessary service and UBS ports to secure PC operational condition.  In addition, IT deployed solutions to enable the teacher to perform advanced administrative tasks on pupil's machines. Besides, the volunteers led a class with forty students, who were quizzed on basic computer knowledge, then taught to use Paint program to draw simple pictures.
  • School Painting for Disabled Children in District 12: On September 12, 2008, the big group of 147 Intel Vietnam employees helped paint 12 classrooms of a school for disabled children in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City. "The opportunity is to give back to the community and make a real and visible difference for the school. It was also great that we did it as a team of almost 150 people" said Rick Howarth - Intel Products Vietnam General Manager
