Intel^® Involved in the Community - Malaysia

Intel Malaysia is committed to enhancing the quality of life in the communities in which they live and work. For over 35 years, various corporate responsibility activities have been conducted in areas including Penang, Kulim and Cyberjaya. Intel Malaysia seeks to help local communities by involving its staff in volunteer programs in the areas of education, environment and disaster aid relief. Intel Malaysia has committed 85,000 hours this year to community volunteer work.

Through the Intel Involved Matching Grant Program (IIMGP), Intel Malaysia employees are encouraged to volunteer in schools and work directly with children to provide practical demonstrations in science, math and technology, as well as emphasize the importance of a good education. In the last four years, Intel Involved volunteers have logged 150,000 volunteer hours in education-oriented volunteer work. This year, a donation of MYR 710,000 (US$219,498) has already been given to 23 participating schools by the Intel Foundation.

Intel® Involved in the Community - Malaysia Another education initiative is Intel Malaysia’s “Back2School” program, which aims to help economically disadvantaged children in Kulim and Penang when they start school. Established in 1996, the program provides children with Back2School kits each year. The kits include new school bags, uniforms, shoes and writing materials. On January 17 2008, a total of 200 primary and secondary school students from 25 schools in Penang and Kulim received Back2School kits.

As part of a leadership initiative to expand HIV/AIDS awareness, Intel Malaysia held an event in conjunction with World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1st each year. The program reaches out to employees, teachers and students of 12 secondary schools in Penang and Kulim. More than 120 participants attended the event in 2007, which included presentations, videos, and displays from the Penang Department of Health. Learning was also reinforced through an interactive game session, a quiz, and short impromptu skits produced by the participants.

Intel Involved volunteers are also committed to preserving the environment. Besides initiating recycling programs, Intel Malaysia plays an active role in Global Earth Day celebrations. To date, Intel has sponsored over 20 events related to Global Earth Day, with the latest activity being a partnership with Global Earth Day to plant mangrove saplings at Kuala Haji Ibrahim in Sungai Aceh, Nibong Tebal. A total of MYR 30,000 (US$9,275) was raised for charity, with over 1,500 mangrove tree saplings planted by 150 Intel Involved volunteers.

Intel Involved volunteers have also participated in various disaster relief efforts around the region. To date, Intel Malaysia has donated MYR 285,000 (US$88,117) to various disaster relief funds and has sent 200 volunteers to help in tsunami relief efforts.

Intel Malaysia’s leading role in corporate responsibility resulted in the first Intel CSR Forum in 2006, followed by the formation of the Penang CSR Committee with the Penang State Government. In November 2007, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi presented eight awards at the Prime Minister's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards, in which Intel Malaysia was the winner for the segment of community and social development. For the third consecutive year running, Intel Malaysia also won the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award for Environmental Performance.
