- PCs For PCs - SWINDON, UK, 5 th November 2003 – Intel today announced that Devon & Cornwall Police is using the power of Intel technology to enhance services to the community and help fight crime.  Refreshing its existing IT infrastructure with 1,400 Intel® Pentium® 4 processor-based desktops from Compusys plc, has delivered the performance capabilities to deploy new applications including the Police National Legal Database, Holmes II and the Prisoner Imaging software platform.  These applications will enable the regional police force to target criminals more effectively and deliver an improved crime fighting service to the community.

The investment in new PCs powered by the Intel Pentium 4 processor, shows Devon & Cornwall Police to be leading the way by using IT to support day-to-day policing services.  Alongside the new applications realised through upgrading existing dumb terminals and Intel based PCs to new standardised desktops, all staff now have e-mail and Internet access necessary to improve communications and response times.  Protecting sensitive public data is also paramount and the new PCs can now also run operation-critical firewall and virus guard applications in the background without hindering the end-user experience.  Looking to the future, the next refresh will give the force access to Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology.  In these computing environments, the use of Hyper-Threading technology is of particular benefit to the end user as it enables a more efficient use of resources to run several demanding software applications concurrently.

“Moving from dumb terminals to our new standardised Pentium 4 processor-powered desktops has been quite a revolution for our staff,” explained Gill Cameron-Web, IT Project Manager, Devon and Cornwall Police.  “The transition is delivering tremendous benefits.  Employees were previously restricted in their work by limited access to the Internet and to e-mail, making it difficult to efficiently and effectively carry out daily tasks.  With the new computers we can introduce a range of new applications to enable improved levels of service to the community.”

“The need to upgrade to high performance desktop solutions is one of the biggest concerns for organisations, yet many have not refreshed their existing PC infrastructures since the year 2000,” explained Rick Skett, Director, Intel UK and Ireland.  “With this deployment, Devon & Cornwall Police has invested wisely in an area where it is of most value to both the organisation and the local communities.”

Devon & Cornwall Police also looked to Intel Premier Provider, Compusys to manage and deploy the desktop refresh programme. The system integrator’s experience ensured minimum disruption to services during what was a service critical project.

“By deploying a high performance desktop infrastructure based on the Intel Pentium 4 processor, their communities will receive a superior service and faster response time to queries well into the future,” said Gordon Davies, Commercial Director, Compusys.
