Intel recently introduced the Boxed Pentium® III processor with 512KB L2 cache for DP servers. The Intel Pentium III processor with 512KB cache will be introduced at 1.13GHz. This processor is designed for server platforms and is not supported by motherboards designed for previous Pentium III processors. Using this processor in a legacy motherboard will likely cause the processor to operate out of specification and may void the 3 year limited warranty. System integrators should take care to select an appropriate server board to support the Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 cache
This Boxed Pentium® III processor with 512KB L2 cache is designed for the latest server platforms only. The Intel Pentium III processor with 512k cache for DP servers can easily be identified by the "-S" designator used on part markings, packaging, and price lists. For example, "Pentium® III Processor 1.13GHz-S."
Using this processor in a desktop motherboard will likely cause the processor to operate out of specification and may void the 3 year limited warranty. When choosing a server board, please make sure to verify that the board supports the Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 cache. Older Pentium III processor-based server boards will not support these new 512KB L2 cache parts.
The Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 cache requires a specific version of chipset and voltage regulator to support its lower voltage signaling. Please consult the Pentium® III Source list for available motherboards intended for supporting this processor or contact your server board vendor to verify compatibility with this processor.
When consulting with your server board vendor, please ask for specific support of the Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 cache. In addition, the Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 cache has more stringent voltage regulator requirements than all Pentium III processors with 256KB L2 cache. It is important to choose a motherboard that supports both the right chipset and an appropriate voltage regulator to support Pentium III processors with 512KB L2 cache.
