Customer Demand Drives Small Form Factor (SFF) Desktop Growth
Chassis size is expected to play a significant role in the evolution of PC usage. International Data Corporation (IDC)—a market research and analysis firm—predicts that more than 40 percent of all desktop sales will be in PC cases with a volume of less than 19 liters by 2012.

Intel is working with ecosystem vendors to ensure that system integrators can take advantage of this significant trend.

Small Form Factor Desktops Today
These are some of the various forms desktops are taking today. Each of these form factors make the PC more suitable for the specific purpose it was built.

SFF PC: An 8- to 19-liter desktop that can be built using either a micro-ATX or mini-ITX motherboard.	Ultra SFF PC: A 4- to 8-liter desktop built with a mini-ITX motherboard, which IDC believes will be the fastest growing desktop form factor in the next four years.	Media PC: A small media center PC that delivers the power and performance consumers demand, with greater energy efficiency and a space saving design.
All-in-One PC: A desktop PC where the PC is built into the monitor body. All major PC manufacturers are offering all-in-one systems targeted mainly at consumers.	Two-in-One PC: A VESA-mounted PC behind a monitor is lightweight and quiet enough to not be noticed, and it leaves more desk space for working.	Cool/Stylish PC: A PC that offers a more stylish and personalized look that makes users want to put their desktop PCs on the desk, rather than under it.
Embedded PC: PCs that are built for a single purpose into a larger product such as a kiosk, digital banner, or any kind of set-top. These are typically wall or table mountable and come in basic and simple designs.	Generic Low-Cost PC: Any lowerpriced desktop PC that is intended for a single application use such as accessing the Internet. The key attribute customers are looking for here is a low price point.	Home Server PC: Typically a Microsoft* Windows* Home Server OS-based PC with multiple HDD support for media and file sharing or backing up full PC images on the local network.
Open Frame PC: This is a PC designed to have more accessibility inside the guts of the PC and to impress or grab attention.

Intel® desktop boards continue to support micro-ATX form factor PCs, and now mini-ITX-compatible boards have been added to the portfolio for ultra small form factor (uSFF) designs. The compatibility of mini-ITX boards with micro-ATX chassis makes them an ideal choice for building small desktop PCs today and in the future.

Thermal Solutions: New Standard Lower-Profile Thermal Solutions for the Performance, Mainstream, and Value Markets
New lower-profile, standard boxed thermal solutions from Intel enable greater form factor chassis compatibility and higher thermal performance for smaller cases. Intel’s 45nm manufacturing technology has made lower thermal design power (TDP) processors possible, allowing lower-profile thermal solutions and enabling small form factor desktop solutions. These lower-profile thermal solutions cut 15mm from the overall board height, enabling thinner form factors.

Different Chassis Requirements

• Mechanical: mainstream boards use larger and taller fan thermal solutions
• Thermal: mainstream boards support 65 W processors and other components; nettop total TDP is approximately 35 W
• Electrical: the minimum PSU requirement for mainstream boards is 150 W; nettop minimum PSU is approximately 75 W

Other PC Components Also Getting Smaller

• Mobile or slim optical drives are coming down in price as well as increasing in availability (both SATA and PATA.)
• Desktop standard-sized optical drives have decreased in length in the last few years from 205mm to approximately 170mm on average.
• Mobile hard drives are available in larger densities and faster speeds, and their price premiums over desktop HDDs are decreasing. Solid state drives are also coming into the market.
• Low-profile add-in cards from many manufacturers are available providing expansion options that were previously available only on larger desktops, such as TV tuners, wireless access, and USB and 1394 ports.
• DC boards that go into the chassis to work with external power adapters are getting smaller, such as the picoPSU from Mini-Box.com*.
