Kent & Medway NHS Trust – NHS Tests Future Mobility

Company
The Kent and Medway Strategic Heath Authority (K&M SHA) serves a population of 1.6 million people, many of which live in densely populated sprawling urban areas just south of London. The K&M SHA has responsibility for the local National Health Service (NHS) through the management of local trusts.

Challenge
  • Enhance mental health crisis services by improving response times to “crises” and identifying actions that could further advance services
  • Reduce the risks that both clinicians and service users face when a patient’s condition deteriorates rapidly
  • Test the viability of a mobility solution across a large geographical area in a controlled pilot over a three-month period

Solution
  • Intel® designed, developed and implemented a mobility Proof of Concept using Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ LIFEBOOK* T Series Tablet PCs powered by Intel® Centrino® processor technology, Citrix-based thin-client middleware, Cable & Wireless VPN connections and a Vodafone wireless network
  • Up to 50 mental health clinicians trialled the mobile technology in three different mental health practice areas and over a large geographic area
  • Evaluated the viability of mobile working in enhancing mental health crisis services. Also assessed the wider impact on information held in legacy Trust Information Systems
