Cape Town City Council – Controlling a Disparate PC Fleet

Company
Metropolitan council organisation employing 23,000 workers in offices and public amenities across a wide area of Cape Town

Product evaluated
Intel® Core™ 2 processor with vPro™ processor technology

Challenge
Council needed to reduce the indirect portion of its total cost of ownership (TCO) per PC in its existing fleet, and minimise future costs in order to accommodate reduced budget, while improving efficiency of its PC management processes

Results
Independent assessment of Intel® vPro™ processor technology showed that more calls to help desk could be solved remotely, significantly reducing costs and speeding PC repair process. Software updates and security patches could also be carried out faster and more effectively using Intel® vPro™ processor technology

Impact
Implementing Intel® vPro™ processor technology over three years, Council expects to reduce downtime by half, leading to an approximate accumulated cost saving of 34 million Rand (USD 4.8 million) after three years, and from then onwards an annual saving of 17 million Rand (USD 2.4 million), to be reinvested in training and improved equipment for IT staff. Improved help desk performance is also expected to improve end user satisfaction and productivity.

Next steps
The IT department will develop a business case for rolling out Intel® vPro™ processor technology across the council based on assessment findings. As mobile working becomes more prevalent, the council also plans to consider Intel® Centrino® with vPro™ technology.
