Energy companies face a grueling set of challenges as they strive to manage the astronomical cost and risk associated with finding and lifting resources out of the grounrisk associated with finding and lifting resources d and mining profits from complex, multi-party value chains in spite of thin margins and fierce competition. But one way companies can succeed in this high-stakes industry is by shifting from closed and proprietary RISC-based computing systems to ones based on open industry standards—particularly in the critical area of high performance computing.

Recent technical computing benchmarks validate the shift from RISC to EPIC (Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing) with Itanium® 2-based platforms outperforming RISC-based systems on industry standard applications. Intel is helping companies make this shift by providing energy competency centers in areas like Abu Dhabi, Norway, and coming soon to Moscow, where companies can assess Intel® architecture-based solutions. Equipped with a wide range of high-performance, Intel® technology-based platforms, these facilities enable companies to run simulations using their own data in order to evaluate various upstream and downstream solutions.
