Intel® Teach to the Future Program Technology training for the future
Intel® Teach to the Future is a free professional development program for K-12 in-service teachers and pre-service educators. Participants learn how, when, and where to incorporate technology tools and resources into their curriculum.
"The scope of this program represents the industry's recognition that all the educational technology in classrooms today is worth nothing if teachers don't know how to use it effectively. Computers aren't magic, teachers are."back to top
- Craig Barrett, Intel's president and chief operating officer.
Program overview
The goal of the Intel Teach to the Future Program is to train classroom teachers how to effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum and promote inquiry-based learning so that students will increase their learning and achievement.
The training consists of forty hours of hands-on instruction plus twenty hours of take home activities to be delivered via ten curricular modules.
Program themes
The themes of the Intel Teach to the Future Program include:
- Effective use of technology in the classroom.
- A focus on the ways students and teachers can use technology to enhance learning through research, communication, and productivity strategies and tools.
- An emphasis on "hands-on" learning and the creation of curricular units and evaluation tools, which address provincial academic and technology guidelines.
- Promoting engaging opportunities for students through access to technology.
- Encouraging teachers to work in teams, problem-solve and participate in peer review of their units.
Program history
The Intel Teach to the Future program was built on the successes of the 1998 and 1999 Intel Applying Computers in Education (ACE) Project.
During 1998 and 1999, the Intel ACE Project trained over 3,300 teachers in communities where Intel Corporation had major facilities and where Intel has been active in supporting public schools. These communities were Santa Clara and Folsom (CA), Hillsboro (OR), Dupont (WA), Rio Rancho (NM), Chandler (AZ), Hudson (MA), Washington D.C., and Fort Worth (TX).
The Intel ACE Project was very successful. Teachers created over 2,300 lessons, which integrated technology into their existing curriculum. In addition, over 95 percent of the participants at each of the training sites reported that they had learned new skills, which would directly benefit their students.
back to topIn-service program in Canada
The Intel® Teach to the Future In-Service program offers K-12 classroom teachers curriculum designed specifically for their needs. Teachers learn how, when, and where to incorporate technology tools and resources into their teaching. They also learn how to create assessment tools and align lesson plans with provincial learning outcomes. The goal is to prepare today's teachers and students for tomorrow's demands.
More than 125 Master Teachers have been trained on the delivery of this award winning curriculum to their colleagues within their school boards. There are now 2000 participant teachers who have been helped to effectively integrate technology into daily classroom activities to enhance student learning.

Emphasis is on effective use of technology in the classroom, research, communications, and productivity strategies, and working in teams to solve problems.
The goal of the Intel® Teach to the Future program is to train classroom teachers on how to promote project-based learning and effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum to support student achievement. Teachers are provided with all the necessary curriculum materials.
back to topPre-service program in Canada
Many higher education teacher development programs have not yet taken advantage of the rapid increase of technology infrastructure in schools. Most pre-service students find that the routine use of technology in their coursework is not required, nor is it integrated into the subjects they plan to teach; yet teachers are required to perform technology integration functions.
The Intel® Teach to the Future Pre-Service program addresses the critical need facing teacher educators to model technology integration to pre-service student teachers. The program is available to interested teacher educators free of charge. To apply, contact teacher.preservice@intel.com.
Program background
Modeled after the successful In-Service program, Intel launched the Intel Teach to the Future Pre-Service Program in 2001 with 20 universities. It is now available for teacher educators in the United States and Canada.
The Intel Teach to the Future Pre-Service Program is a four-day hands-on curriculum review led by current K-12 teachers or university faculty. During the workshop, teacher educators learn to use multimedia, productivity, and communication software and integrate these tools into pre-service coursework. They return with strategies for helping pre-service students incorporate technology effectively including a management system for electronic portfolios. The program incorporates use of the Internet, Web page design, and productivity software.
- Each participating faculty commits to use the Intel Teach to the Future curriculum with at least 25 pre-service students within one year of completing the Faculty Member workshop.
- All materials are provided to the students free of charge.
- There is no charge for participation in this faculty development opportunity; however, travel costs are the responsibility of the attendees.
Curriculum overview
Developed by educators for educators to support development of technology-rich curricular units and evaluation tools, this program helps faculties of education meet ISTE's National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Teachers. The curriculum is designed to strengthen pre-service courses through adaptable, hands-on modules.
The Intel Teach to the Future Pre-Service curriculum introduces technology tools and strategies for enhancing learning through research, communication, and productivity tools. This hands-on training is designed to use "essential questions" to support effective instructional design and allows teacher educators to develop technology uses appropriate within their courses. All curriculum materials are provided free of charge to faculty for student use.
The faculty training consists of 32 hours of hands-on instruction through 10 curricular modules with the following key benefits:
- Faculty are able to implement the program using an approach that is consistent with existing course syllabi and schedules.
- Curriculum is aligned to ISTE's National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Teachers.
- Pre-service students are given a mechanism to compile an electronic portfolio demonstrating use of technology integration with multiple applications
Unit and lesson plans
Teachers learn from other teachers how, when and where to incorporate technology tools and resources into their lesson plans. In addition, they are instructed on how best to create assessment tools and align lessons with educational learning goals and standards. The program incorporates use of the Internet, Web page design, and student projects.
More than ONE MILLION teachers worldwide have successfully completed the program. By 2005, two million teachers are expected to be trained worldwide. This program is presented with support from Microsoft Corporation.*
