Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Wins 2009 Intel Schools of Distinction "Star Innovator" Award

Intel is proud to name Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy as the "Star Innovator" among six winners of the 2009 Intel Schools of Distinction Awards.

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is a state agency created to ensure that the needs of highly talented math and science students are being met. The Academy seeks to create exceptional opportunities for young scientists dedicated to improving people's lives.

IMSA's excellent staff utilizes flexible schedules, cutting-edge facilities, and technology to advance student achievement. Of the 18 science faculty members, 11 have Ph.D.s, and the remaining hold master's degrees. Each member of this highly trained faculty focuses on their area of specialization, giving students a unique depth of knowledge and understanding.

All IMSA students take a Methods in Scientific Inquiry skills class, then move on to a unique variety of science coursework. They design hands-on experiments, make observations, analyze data, draw conclusions, and communicate evidence-based principles. Students also delve into scientific literature and build understanding using investigation and information synthesis.

These skills and abilities are then extended with electives and the Student Inquiry and Research (SIR) program. In this program, students partner with cutting-edge scientists on diagnostics, nanotechnology, medical research, and much more.

The outcome is consistently strong performance. In 2008, 86% scored three or higher out of five on AP exams.
